10 Tips for Interview Preparation

10 Tips for Interview Preparation

Author: Alexander Cater

Congratulations, you’ve got an interview lined up!

Here are some helpful tips to make sure you put your best foot forward and maximise that opportunity.

1. Research the company

Get under the skin of the organisation you are applying to and understand it’s mission, values and culture, and check to see if it has appeared in the news recently. This will help you tailor your responses to common questions and demonstrate genuine interest.

For example, Acuity has six core values that we look for in current and potential employees.

2. Understand the role

Make sure you have read the job description thoroughly and meticulously match your skills and experience to the role.

Whilst you may not be expected to have the most experience in the world, you will be expected to be able to demonstrate what you have learned from past roles and what you can bring to the job.

3. Practice for common questions

Prepare answers for common interview questions like: “Tell me about yourself”, “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” and “Why do you want to work here?”

Also keep in mind that you may need to tailor your answers if the question asked in the interview doesn’t exactly line up with what you prepared for.

4. Prepare your questions

Remember that an interview is a two-way process. Have some questions ready to ask the interviewer about the company, team, or role. This shows your interest and, perhaps more importantly, is your opportunity to get a better understanding about whether the job is for you.

If you are ever stuck for ideas, check out the company’s social media or website.

5. Mock interviews

Practice with a friend or use online resources to simulate the interview experience. This can help reduce anxiety and build confidence.

Try and take these mock interviews seriously so you can get the most out of them. Encourage your mock interviewer to push you on your answers and not just read out a list of questions you prepared and can answer by rote.

6. Plan your outfit

Choose a professional outfit that aligns with the company’s culture. Try it on before the day to check that it fits well and get used to wearing it.

If you are concerned about what clothing is expected, then getting in touch with the company can be a good first step to alleviate any worries.

If you don’t have access to a suitable wardrobe, there are organisations that can help you get dressed for success.

7. Prepare and organise your documents

If you are asked to bring or prepare any documents, then ensure that these are ready before the day of the interview. Keep any documents safe in a suitable carry case and check through them before the actual interview.

8. Be punctual

Plan your route to the interview location and aim to arrive at least 10-15 minutes early. This shows that you are punctual and reliable while also giving you time to calm your nerves.

Keep in mind things like parking, public transportation timings, and possible interruptions to your journey like events or weather. It never hurts to have a backup option either.

9. Body language:

55% of the cues we receive during a conversation come from our body language so be mindful of it.

Look your interviewer in the eye, shake their hand a firmly and don’t slouch! You want to present yourself as confident (even if you don’t feel it) so do your best and fake it until you make it!

10. Follow up:

If appropriate, send a thank-you email after the interview, expressing appreciation for the opportunity and reiterating your interest in the position.

Additionally, if you promised to provide any follow-up information or answers in the interview itself then make sure you actually do!

Good luck!
